How do you even begin a career in PR for sports or entertainment industries if you don’t know anyone? One can always align themselves with the industry in one small way or another, but that can only do so much. In the end would you say it’s luck?

I’m an advocate of starting in your backyard. There are colleges and universities in your city or state that you can obtain valuable experience in the Sports Information (i.e PR Dept). You can gain the experience of working with the media, athletes and an organization/company.

You can also take an entry level or internship position. Be mentored by someone that does what you want to do! This way you learn the ropes without all the pitfalls that occur by trying to go it alone.

I’ve been given in PR: “Make connections with people before you need them.” In PR, it’s not just about the connections you make on the job or at networking events. To be in PR means up holding standards even when your out with friends. Some of the best connections I’ve made have been out on town with friends or family at places that are often visited by myself and people in my profession/industry. Some of those people have actually, later, been helpful in my career with media coverage, PR help, etc. though the initial connection had very little to do with PR or my career.

The other things to remember is that if you view every one you meet as a “networking opportunity”, It will be a lot harder to make a connection. No one wants to feel like a piece of your ladder to success. Learn from people, MAKE REAL CONNECTIONS! That’s what makes a person great in PR, that is what real PR is all about 🙂

My daughter is a Junior, majoring in PR/Communications and is now looking for internships.
She has found amazing internships out of state, but, with money being so tight (single mother) I think she may have to find an internship locally in Cleveland. She wants to get into a PR firm that deals with Entertainment or Fashion. Is it vital she interns in New York, Chicago, L.A. or Atlanta?

I am a student from Mumbai, currently pursuing bachelors in mass media. I aspire to become a PR manager and I’ve done a bit of a research about it too. Now I am applying for summer internships but have no idea what to write in the resume. It would be great if you could help me with tips and guidelines to write the perfect resume to impress an employer. A sample resume would do too.
